When we walked into the JW Marriott Hotel Mexico City, we were immediately welcomed by a smiling employee, Paola, who cheerfully showed us around. Most of the Mexican-hotel employees we’ve come across have been friendly, but Paola really stands out. When I mentioned that my mom likes flowers, for example, she guided me to several of the hotel’s best arrangements so that I could send photos. The hotel facilities also were excellent: Aside from fresh flowers in the lobby, the Marriott has a full gym, pool, hot tub, sauna and steam room, all free for guests. WiFi costs extra. Rooms come with robes, slippers, umbrellas, hair dryers, air conditioning, irons, safes and mini bars. Corner rooms have the best views, with large panoramic windows. The terrace suite has a separate sitting area with large windows that mostly view the roof, and also includes access to the executive lounge, which has free WiFi and free meals, snacks and drinks. The Marriott also has a restaurant that serves a daily brunch, a “library” that serves drinks and 24-hour room and concierge services.

Stuck in a row of towering monolithic hotels, this Marriott manages to feel much smaller than it is. The lobby, a warm, comfortable affair that includes an English-style library that will have you reaching for your snifter, has something to do with that. The employees we met were amazingly friendly, including one who actually declined a tip because she said it was her pleasure to help us. The rooms are more interesting than those at other chain hotels in the neighborhood. Consider asking for a corner room on one of the upper floors. Those rooms have an interesting angled shape, a luxurious bathroom and astounding views of the city and beyond. If you book a terrace suite, which includes a comfy living room, you also get access to the posh executive lounge, which offers meals, complimentary wine and internet access. The Marriott was a step above the other monoliths in the area.
