Kalani Oceanside Retreat is located on the southern coast of the Big Island. The property is situated equidistant from the two freeways heading up north, so trips to Hilo or even downtown Pahoa take a bit of time. However, as the name implies, this is a “retreat” and it’s probably better that way.

It’s a non-profit business and they offer plenty of programs for those looking to connect with nature. The pool is “clothing optional” and they offer nude yoga classes. That should give you an idea of how “free” this place is.

The entire property is very well-maintained. Everything from the lobby to the fitness room to the cottages are immaculate. Cell service and wireless Internet may not be available in a lot of places. If you need to connect, head to the lobby with your electronics because that’s your best bet.

The rooms are really lovely, complete with king-size beds and ktichens (in some). The bonus is that they are all environmentally thoughtful, with some cottages utilizing bamboo instead of wood.

If you’re looking to visit Hawaii to “get away” and you don’t care to visit any of the bigger cities, this would be a good choice. I don’t think I’ve been anywhere else on the island where I felt so far removed.

Pahoa/Puna is full of all times of alternative communities and Kalani is the biggest and longest running of them all. I've never stayed at Kalani but there are always events going on that welcome outside guests to visit. If you want to drop by and just check it out there is pool, yoga classes and a daily health buffet style lunch available.

Lived here as a volunteer in the kitchen. The big island is rustic, it's in the jungle, it's a beautiful place with a ton to do, and it's full of intriguing people. Quite a trip! Happy to share more details about my experience.

Just one mile from the cottage, it offers a roadside cafe for all, a buffet restaurant, pool and spa facilities that are available at a day rate. Get a Lomi Lomi or aqua massage at a special discount from our friend, Sylvie Gendron, who offers both types of massages there.

This resort is located at the far southern end of Pahoa. Although the property is huge, it is easily missed from the road. Perhaps, because it is a bit more isolated, it is more suitable for a retreat and to get away from normal life for a few days.
The property office is situated with the gift shop off the road at the entrance of the property.
The resort has a great numbers of apartment and condo units. All units were nicely decorated and well-maintained.
Classes such as yoga are popular here. Also offered are spa services for rejuvenation. It is a place to relax and perhaps to find oneself.
I am more into walking along the shoreline and watching the big waves crashing onto the rocks. Because of the overgrown forest of trees and plants, I found the area kind of gloomy. It’s just my personal perception of the area. I am sure a lot of people like this place.
