Quaint little town. It's much cooler here than elsewhere around the island (bring a sweatshirt) but has beautiful green rolling hills. Good restaurants and fairly close to the big resorts of the Kohala coast.

The heart of paniolo (cowboy) country on the Big Island, Waimea (Kamuela) is really just a one-horse town with touristy shops, some outstanding local and Hawaii Regional Cuisine restaurants, and the historical sites on the Parker Ranch. You'll probably only make a quick stop here en route between the Kona and Hilo sides of the island.

Up in the cool highlands it is hard to believe you are still in Hawaii. You may see cowboys herding cattle and are surrounded by mountains and seas of grass-- nary a beach in sight. Much lest touristed and very relaxing. We made a base here and were able to get to the beach in Kona in under 40 minutes. Nice to have the contrast.
