Owned by wonderfully friendly, welcoming, laid back Tongans, Vini and Liz, keleti will give you a great taste of Tonga. Situated above tidal rock pools with patches of beach where you can swim and snorkel (not a lot to see) at high tide or watch the whales. Keleti is "tired" however the staff more than make up for that. Fales are clean and come with ensuite although hot water is variable ie. hot/cold/hot/cold. Tea and coffee making facilities in your room but remember to ask for milk which will be given generously, just forgotten. Bar fridge in your room and fan. Restaurant and bar available on site where the food is excellent and all is very reasonably priced. It's open pretty much whenever you want to eat/drink.
The staff will take you anywhere you want to go, even give you an island tour or take you to a Tongan feast on Wednesdays or Friday night. Vini dropped us in town, Nuku'alofa, a good 20 minutes or more away, then retuned to pick us up later. He also collected us on our arrival from the airport at 11.30 pm. There may or may not have been a charge for this but it was all so cheap it didn't matter.
The ocean absolutely roars here, louder than other places we stayed. Everything is covered in salt and damp.
We stayed at Keleti our first 2 nights and our last and if I were lucky enough to get to Tonga again I'd do the same as it's nearer the airport although they drive so slow in Tonga the trip still takes ages.
I've given Keleti a rating of 4 because the staff are so great but don't expect anything swank - this is for those who want a cultural experience and no stars :)
