According to Jonny Bealby of tour operator Wild Frontiers, the new houseboat Lotus brings an added level of comfort to the backwaters of Malabar in northern Kerala—and not just because of the air-conditioning. The two guest rooms have handmade teak furniture and private verandas for your journey. If you prefer to explore by car, head five hours south from Kochi to Kovalem, a fisherman’s beach fringed with coconut groves. Or, head east to the mountainous area of Munnar, studded with tea plantations, including Kolukkumalai Tea Estate, one of the world’s highest. Wherever you roam, you can stretch your dollars farther as the rupee has fallen in value.

We all know that Kerala is a Gods Own Country because of its rich cultures, traditions and tropical beauty. Most of the travelers from all around the world will visit ones in their life. Kerala is the perfect place for a leisurely vacation.

Lushness defines this southernmost Indian state -- from the emerald-green of the rice paddies, to the bottle-green of the backwaters, to the green gardens of the tea plantations up in the hills. It's amongst the most literate and prosperous in India, and its laid-back vibe a welcome counterpoint after the craziness of North India. Whether you're into beaches, ashrams, or Ayurveda, it's one of the most rewarding regions of the subcontinent to explore.

One of my favorite places in India, Kerala offers so much to do. From Fort Kochin (a good starting point) to the backwaters by boat and on to the Periyar Wildlife Preserve to spot wild elephants, you could easily spend a month or more here and love every minute of it. Meaning "Land of Coconuts," it's not surprisng that Kerala's food is delicious.
