The houseboats in Kerala, south India, are huge, slow-moving, exotic barges used for leisure trips. They are a reworked model of Kettuvallams (in the Malayalam language, Kettu means "tied with ropes", and vallam means "boat"), which, in earlier times, were used to carry rice and spices from Kuttanad to the Kochi port. Kerala houseboats were considered a convenient means of ...Popular with

his hotel/retreat is located near the tea fields about 700m off the main road 7km before Munnar town. Very peaceful setting surrounded by trees with views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Rooms were clean, large and attractively decorated. Bed was very comfortable by Indian standards. Food was tasty, it was all "veg", but even though we are carnivores we ...Popular with

A beautiful place to stay. But if this high end hotel is not within budget, I highly recommend to visit their coffee shop. Enjoy a masala chai with cake on their nice terras with a view on the cargo ships passing by.

As good or better than three star hotels. An educated, forward thinking, open minded elderly couple. Nice coffee and eggs in the morning included. Rooms without a dot of dirt. And a homestay located right next to the Chinese fishing nets in Fort Kochi.

Marari Villas comprises three 'boutique serviced villa' properties: Orchid Pool Cottage (sleeps 2); Hibiscus Heritage Cottage (sleeps 2) and Palm Beach Villa (sleeps 6). Both Orchid and Hibiscus come with their own pools, offering welcome respite from the Keralan sun, as ...

Keralan teakwood house in the grounds of an Ayurvedic health centre in the lovely village of Ezhupunna South, about 30 kms from Fort Cochin. Basic but comfortable accommodation which serves as an ideal base for exploring the nearby backwaters, as well as experiencing an Ayurvedic treatment. Top-notch place in a renovated 15th century Portuguese mansion. Rooms are comfortable, clean, and their restaurant/cafe is very good, serving Indian and Western food. Leslie, the owner, goes the extra mile to make guests feel comfortable and assist in planning onward journeys. Prices are in the 3000 rupee range ($45 a night for a double), and the location in Fort ...Popular with

This was our favorite place we stayed during our trip to India last year. It's a true homestay experience, and the hosts make you feel immediately comfortable in their beautiful home. We learned so much about Indian culture from talking with Sonny, who also happens to be a marvelous cook. If you want a true Indian homestay experience in a ...Popular with
