A former prison, Kilmainham Gaol is today an important museum that tells the story of Dublins historic past as many national heros were imprisoned and executed hereRecommended for:

Fascinating insight into Irish history, especially their war for independence. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Don’t let a line to get in deter you from experiencing it, they move fast and it’s well worth the short wait.

My favorite of the tourist sights. A must-see explanation of Irish history and the struggle for independence coupled with a tour of Ireland's most famous jail.
A guided tour is required so plan in advance to avoid being disappointed. During busy times, the tours sell out well in advance so you could end up waiting for a bit. There is a museum close by where you could burn some wait time but this part of town doesn't have a lot else to offer so you wouldn't want to be here for too long.Recommended for:

So cool: gorgeous Victorian jail (well, as gorgeous as a jail can be), now made into a history museum, largely about the 1916 Easter Rising. You go through on a guided tour, and the guide we had was very good. There's a well laid out exhibition area to tour while you're waiting for the next tour. Great combo of spooky, informative and rabble-rousing.Recommended for:

This place is an important part of the Irish revolution. This housed several important revolutionaries during its life. It is now decommissioned and is operated as a tourist sitre and for shooting movies. The guided tour is pretty instructive and takes one through all the parts of the Jail.
