The Amalfi Hotel is located on a tourist-friendly stretch of Kinzie that puts visitors within strolling distance of places such as Haray Caray’s, Morton’s, and a variety of Hubbard Avenue spots. However, if you’re looking something with a bit more local flair, walk on over to the famous Billy Goat tavern, or grab a drink at the delightfully scummy Rossi’s.
The hotel itself is a smaller-sized one for the area, and features a pretty basic hotel lobby that didn’t exactly blow me away. It’s also undergoing a renovation, which may be a good thing because you may be able to stay here soon and enjoy brand-new amenities.

It might be a little unfair to give this hotel 3 stars since they're about a month away from a complete rebranding (it'll be the Kinzie Hotel by February 2014, the staff said), but my experience was marred by first not being able to find the entrance (down the street, through a lobby, up an elevator, down a hall to the executive offices) and then talking to four or five staff members in a crowded and cluttered office instead of a proper lobby. The rooms were nice, but they're being renovated, so what I saw likely won't be what you see...unless you're staying here next week.

I was transported back to Europe by the chocolate-filled croissants from the Continental breakfasts laid out on every floor of this hotel each morning near the elevators. I had this experience over and over again while I stayed at the Amalfi: there was some great little touch that no one charged me extra for. The wireless was free; there is a lending library of books and DVDs; the manager’s reception is half an hour longer than the hour most hotels offer, with specialty house martinis. The “Amalfitini” is a little sweet for me, but is based around something I love: limoncello, the sweet lemon liqueur from the Italy’s Amalfi coast. An extra splash of unflavored vodka, provided with a smile by the bartender, did the trick. The “Sorrento” was less sweet and delicious as is. The hearty cold snacks were also Mediterranean: pita with hummus, crostini with an assortment of hard cheeses and salumi and some crudités. The rooms themselves were comfortable, if not overly large, with all the modern electronic touches we’re starting to take for granted at this price point in hotels: flat panel TVs and idocks. Two minor quibbles: the morning coffee was more Midwestern-strength than I was expecting and the bathtub was a little on the shallow side. There was a great little cushioned stool in the bathroom, though, that doubled as a tubside wine or newspaper perch. Though the restaurant does not have its own kitchen, you wouldn’t know it from the speed/temperature/appearance of the room service delivery from Harry Caray’s restaurant across the street. My dinner was there under twenty minutes and hot and on proper plates with metal domes. The cheesecake with strawberries was divine.

I was thanking my higher power when I did not have to stand while checking in here, I wasn’t used to doing all the walking Chicago people do, so the cool white seats at the Concierge made me believe in this place right from the start. This hotel made me feel like I was at a modern European hotel while I was staying in Chicago. To-go breakfast is on every floor by the elevator in the morning and helped me maximize my time, as i wanted to get back to enjoying Chicago after I realized I was not actually in Amalfi, Italy…They do a great job making you feel like you are though. The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and colorful--never tacky. The suite was plush, and featured a large rounded panoramic window, with the best view of…Chicago. That’s right. You tried to fool me again hotel, but I remembered this time. I’m in Chicago, not Italy.

bed is comfortable. i LOVED the double showerheads - probably one of the most therapeutic showers i've taken with strong water pressure. the bathroom is extremely spacious and even had a little rolling stool to pull up to a vanity station. the free breakfast on each floor by the elevators meant i could grab some juice and a bagel and go back to my room in my pj's.
