Amazing hike with outstanding views! Not for the elderly, people with knee or hip problems, or people without good shoes. The way down is quite steep and necessitates repeated "pounding" down very large steps

My friend calls this exercise and not a hike, very true. Koko Head an old railroad track that's now used as a hiking trail. It's 1,048 steps, very uphill slope, and major "buns of steel" climb. If you want a great workout, this is an intensive huffing and puffing leg workout every step of the way. Only active fit crazies would finish hiking up in less than 15 mins, while the remaining amateurs attempt to move faster than a snail. Once you reach the top, you have an amazing view of Hanauma Bay and Hawaii Kai, and a little further walk to the edge on the other side, you will see the Windward coast and be welcomed by a nice breeze to cool your sweaty-out-of-breath body off. The view is definitely worth the huffing and puffing for, and your mind and body will thank you for it!

A great hike if you are in shape. Kind of treachorous. I wouldn't let my 12 and 14 yr olds do it and I am glad I had to worry about my steps. But I highly recommend this for the adventurous hiking fit people. The views are beautiful at the top go up to the other bunkers and around there are great views and a nice wind.

This is not a trial...oops, I mean trail...for the feint of heart (or body). This is one of the most physically taxing hikes I've done so far; it's pretty much just a straight stairway (old rail tracks) up the side of a steep mountain. I thought I was gonna keel over of exhaustion the first time I tried to go up...but all the pain and suffering aside, the view from the top is beautiful....Just be prepared! Wear shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, take water, a towel to wipe your face, an iPod if you need music, and all that kinda stuff.

In concept, this is a relatively simple trail; just go up. It is a bit more complex in execution, with some fairly steep areas and a section of ground has fallen away under part of the railway. It is possible to bypass this section on solid ground, but it would probably be best if you followed someone the first time doing it. The views from the top are magnificent. Coming back down is the real challenge, with many of the wooden steps slippery from being wet.

It is a deceptive looking trail. I first saw Koko Head on an episode of Hawaii 5-0 and thought it would be cool to climb. It took an hour and I had to stop quite a bit bot those of you in better shape would probably conquer the climb in a much shorter time. The view at the top is fantastic ... can see all of Waikiki and other parts of the island.
There is definitely a sense of accomplishment after having climbed Koko head.
Word of advice - bring lots of water. It can get pretty hot and you need to hydrate. Also, wear good running shoes and not just sandals.
