Lived in Kula for about 6 years in a wonderful little "ohana" (it was an attached cottage). No other place on the island offers unobstructed views of both the north and south shore of Maui at the same time! It is truly magical. I would highly recommend taking a trip to this dreamy upcountry area and check out the sites; Kula Ali'i Lavender Farm, O'o Farms, entry to Haleakala National Park and Kula Lodge to name a few. Its well worth drive (about 25-30 minutes from Kahului town) and depending on where, or should I say how far you venture 'up' into Kula area, be prepared for a slightly chillier climate...you'll be several thousand feet above sea level! Leave the shorts and tank at your rental and be sure to pack long pants and a medium-lite jacket. Tends to be a lot less tropical, but certainly still green! I live on the opposite side of the island, still with an amazing view looking back at the north shore and Haleakala/Kula areas, but looking forward to moving back to Kula again. I think you'll fall in love with this not-so-typical-island-beachy environment. I mean, who knew right? Maui has it all!

Upcountry is the kind of place where people leave fruit out by the road with a can for payment--it's like a garden, and HAS a few gardens--including a lavender farm--that's delighful.

Kula is a town on the slopes of Haleakala. It is pretty, with nice views of the island, but not something I would go out of my way to visit when on Maui - its mostly residential.

Small back country town that we passed through while we drove the back road to Hana. Some beautiful views from up there and you get to see what was preserved in old Maui.

we stayed at an amazing bed and breakfast in kula (http://www.upcountrybandb.com) a few years ago. amazing host, who actually served as architect for the house. views of north and south coasts, and easy access to most places on the island due to its central location (though lahaina is a bit further out)
