In the movie Volcano, they have the Tar pits erupt and send all of L.A. into ash and dust. Its nice to go to see where the movie took place, but also for the attractions around there as well!

It is kinda depressing to think about all those dinosaurs that were stuck in the tar but without them doing it we would never know about them.
The museum is mostly for children but the tar pits are outside and it is free!
They also have excavation site so this is kinda cool to see.

The tap pit its self is very interesting (small the air) you can take a walk around it and then get to the museum. also they have every weekends free guided walk outside.

This was probably the biggest letdown of an attraction. While the tar pits themselves have been a true treasure for paleontologists, there is not much to see here other than a pond with a fake mammoth sticking out.

I didn't go into the museum but the outside was fascinating, especially because you could see little areas that were springing up tar even after all these years.

Fascinating museum less than an hour's drive from the house.

Description

The La Brea Tar Pits are a physical formation in Los Angeles resulting from tens of thousands of year’s worth of tar seeping up from reserves far below the earth’s surface. The pits are a goldmine of preserved remains of ancient animals that fell into and then could not escape from the tar. Many of these remains are housed in the George C. Page museum, which is dedicated to exhibiting the many ... read more
treasures found within the pits. The entire tar pits complex is a very popular destination for tourists and locals alike, especially those with young children.
