Really, this place is not much to look at: it's a renovated old Army-built officers quarters in the Canal Zone, and inside, the furnishings are simple. But just sit for a while on the hammock on the balcony; observe a family of monkeys scrambling through the trees; read one of the hundreds of books from the bookshelves lining the lobby; wander over to the dining room, where snacks of fresh fruit are free and available all day; enjoy the experience of being right in Panama City, but feeling a million miles away. You can see why this becomes the go-to hotel for everybody who wanders in its doors. And the place really earns its fifth star with its simply stellar service.Recommended for:

There are many unique experiences and places to be seen in Panama City and La Estancia is no different. Think "research outpost". The General Manager, a polite but formal chap named Esteban runs a tight ship and I think may have been a butler in a former life. According to Esteban, La Estancia is favored by scientists, academics and contractors looking for a little solitude and tranquility in the middle of the bustling city. The rooms are well appointed and air conditioned with some offering views of the lush surrounding greenspace that is frequented by monkeys, toucan, and cappybara. Fruits are complimentary throughout the day as is the breakfast which can be taken Continental or American style. La Estancia boasts 15 rooms and 2 suites with a standard room running $82.50 a night.
