The entrance fee is a bit high ($36), but otherwise this is a great place to go visit. Easily accessible from San Jose, and perfect for a day trip when combined with the nearby Poás Volcano. The park offers a variety of different exhibits, with an aviary (you can hold a toucan if you like), butterfly garden, monkey house, cat house, and enclosures for snakes and frogs that allow the visitor to learn some about the natural fauna. All of the animals were confiscated from illegal trafficking and are given a safe home in the park.
In addition to the animals the Gardens have a nice collection of orchids, and a nice trail that leads visitors to a series of small waterfalls. It takes 2-3 hours to see everything, and is on the whole a very pleasant experience. There are many park guides who will explain different parts of the park for free. Their expertise in English varies greatly so it helps to have someone who can translate for them.

Another of our house-guests' all-time favorites. The waterfall gardens are a great way to see some of Costa Rica's wildlife including birds, frogs, snakes, butterflies, monkeys, and big cats. All the animals are well cared for and have been placed at the facility by a wildlife organization. The paths to the waterfalls are well maintained with large railings. The food is great, so definitely plan on lunch.

Coupled with the Poas Volcano, this is a great day trip! The owner has done a great job of making this park easily accessible, while still keeping all of the natural beauty. This animal sanctuary lets you get up close and personal to many different birds and animals of Costa Rica. It is a great place for taking pictures of birds, animals, and waterfalls. The buffet lunch is really good as well!
