Popular hiking spot over ancient lava fields. Local legend says these paths are haunted by the "Night Marchers" once the sun sets.

This is the wild side of Maui, a lava-rock wilderness just outside of Wailea. Worth a visit - wear thick soled shoes!

The stargazing at La Perouse Bay is truly amazing and will blow you away. Just be careful driving through all the lava rock to get there. It is actually not allowed for most rental cars!

From the water, it is a popular place for fishing and snorkel excursions. The best part about a snorkeling adventure is all the dolphins!

Take the road all the way to the end. It can get narrow, so go slow. It’s a beautiful bay. You can snorkel, but it depends on the winds and tides, as it can get very rough. Not recommended for beginners. This hike is not difficult yet exhilarating as the ocean's waves lap along the coast. There is a trail to follow and can take you around the inlets where you can view lava vents from the last volcanic eruption in Maui (1790). There are several awesome black sand beach areas and even a couple of tall Palms showing the resilience of nature! Wear sturdy shoes for ease of travel (hiking boots are best) and bring water as the sun is hot! You will love this hike which can be as long or short as you want.

Get here in the early morning and you may see spinner dolphins! The drive out here is an adventure, from the greenery and ocean views to a lava field. It's almost like you've landed on another planet. Bring shoes so you can enjoy the hike around the point!

Unique, see the lava forming the beach, pass preserves and a bit of Maui wilderness.

Some of the best snorkeling on Maui. It's the end of the road.

Description

The French explorer La Perouse discovered this historical landmark after Haleakala's last eruption in 1788. The eruption had recently destroyed the settlement of Keoneoio. Parts of the village remain intact today, and a strip of lava running through the bay has changed the shoreline permanently. The lava rock and desolate surroundings make for an eerie atmosphere. The bay is at the end of Makena ... read more
Alanui. The terrain is really only appropriate for a four-wheel drive, and the beach is made up mostly of lava rock. It offers prime scuba and snorkel conditions, and can be a good surf spot as well, but it is not a great spot for picnics or suntanning.
