La Mesa Grande is barely just down the street and around the corner. A great place for morning coffee, lunch or a snack. They have a bakery and pizza oven for your pleasure. Thursday night is pizza night with live music. This is only one of so many great restaurants near our apartment.

Our absolutely favourite restaurant for big deal dinners and long relaxed lunches. The open courtyard is elegant with a flower filled fountain in the middle. The best way to enjoy this talented chef's cooking is at lunch by ordering a selection of interesting dishes to share. Burger night on Thursday is a bit of a scene, where you can watch ...

Correo 29 (corner of Recreo), 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., except Tuesdays (open til 4) and Sundays (8 to 8). We really like this groovy spot, with its trendy, modern atmosphere, for breakfast, brunch or lunch - or for just lazing away the afternoon with a great cup of coffee or a cold beer. They have a gourmet bakery on ...

Wed-Sat noon-10, Sun noon-4. Owned by a Cordon-Bleu trained chef who hails from Peru, this popular bistro features a modern, upscale smattering of Peruvian specialties (seafood dishes, pork ribs, gnocchi with shrimp, salads, soups and more). La Parada is a fairly intimate venue, with indoor and outdoor seating, and modern-ish décor. La Parada does not take reservations unless you have ...

Tues-Sat 8 to 4, Sun 8-2. A very casual restaurant in a tranquil and shaded courtyard. It’s kind of like a Mexican version of a diner. They serve reliable traditional breakfast items (of both the American and Mexican variety), freshly squeezed juices and diner-quality coffee. This busy little restaurant is an expat favorite due to their extremely reasonable prices and ...

Open 9 a.m. to midnight. This unpretentious café has tables with large colorful umbrellas stationed on the corner of Cuna de Allende & Cuadrante (just a block behind the Parroquia). We really enjoy it for breakfast and lunch. It’s a great people watching spot, and the simple Mexican fare is consistently good. They also have indoor seating across the street.

La Felguera (the restaurant inside Hotel Carmina Posada). Cuna de Allende 7. This is another restaurant where we eat breakfast often, primarily because of the setting. The restaurant is in a large, shaded courtyard of an old hacienda, with a fountain and beautiful orange trees. The menu is traditional Mexican/American, and the food is reliably good. They often have a ...

Ancha de San Antonio 20, inside the Instituto Allende. This small, casual courtyard café offers what we think of as California-style breakfast items. (The young, bilingual Mexican sisters who own the restaurant must have spent some time in California!) Their menu is not extensive, but the food is consistently good, and they serve pretty good coffee. (They also sell their ...

Perhaps better known to expats as The Fat Mermaid. The reason will become self evident when you walk in and see the voluptuous tailed beauties on the wall. But really, come here for the smoked mussels, the shrimp and bacon tostadas, the steamed artichokes to name just a few of our favourites. All of the food is excellent, the service ...
