This labyrinthian medieval hill town has been restored by a prominent Belgian architect in the last 50 years, and the result is a stunning, functional, charming destination for strolling, dining, or simply catching a gorgeous view of the Italian countryside from the grassy knoll at the very top of the city. Stop by Boccondivino for world-class upscale dining, Tre Porte for delicious pizza, or the bar (you can't miss it) for a classic-style aperitivo.Recommended for:

This tiny town is undiscovered by the English speaking expat set, although full of Dutch. You can stay at the Art Monastery, situated a ten minute walk outside of town in a medieval monastery. The local wine bar, Boccondivino, is right up there with the best of Rome. And the town is perfectly restored with great views of Lago di Piediluco. Oh, and don't forget the castle which is still inhabited by the original noble family. Off the beaten track, but a nice little countryside haven.
