Lago de Chapala is Mexico's largest freshwater lake; it's located southeast of Guadalajara, with the southern section in the state of Michoacan. It's a popular day trip for people wanting a break from the city and also, a popular retirement spot for American and Canadian expats. Lago de Chapala is definitely not in the wild--small communities dot the lake (as do gated communities) but it's scenic and there are some nice, light hikes. In terms of camping on the lake--if you don't mind electricity and running water, there are a couple RV parks that offer camp sites. Not exactly roughing it but the camping is cheap and easy to access.Recommended for:

Lago de Chapala is Mexico's biggest lake. It is located about fifty miles south of Guadalajara. The dimensions of the lake are fifty miles running east to west, and about eight miles north to south.
