The shores of Italy’s second largest lake, Lago Magiore, have been home to Toscanini, its waters and shoreline have been toured by Dickens, and Hemingway and Stendhal incorporated this magnificent lake into important novels. Dotted with significant 19th and 20th century villas, its northern tip reaches into Switzerland. Tour ships ply the waters on a regular schedule, dropping people off at various points such as Isola Bella with its Borromeo Villa. Other ships will follow that can then be boarded to still other locations.

Views from the lakeshore are great but a ferry ride is the best way to see more of Lago Maggiore. We travelled from Stresa to Cannero Riviera getting a chance to look at the islands near Stresa up close and travel up the northern arm of the lake where we viewed the many village and stared in awe at the snow capped mountain peaks.Recommended for:Outdoor Enthusiasts
