Love this lake for a breath of fresh air on a sunny day. Nice 3-4 mile run or bike around. And an amazing outdoor yoga class every Sunday at 11am by the pillars!

Lake Merritt in Oakland is a lovely spot for walking, jogging and boat rentals.
On Saturdays there is a wonderful Farmer's Market close to the lake with live music,
organic locally sourced food, and activities for children and families.

Walkers, runners, bikers, roller bladers and yogis all come to this beautiful lake to enjoy fitness outdoors. It is only a 20 minute walk from downtown Oakland/BART and there is always heavy foot traffic. I still enjoy going for an occasional run here on a nice day. and I do my best to go for post-lunch walks.

Lake Merritt is a beautiful place in the middle of Oakland with a ton of things to see and do. You'll see joggers/walkers at all times of the day. I'm glad that there is free two hour parking along certain parts of the lake.

Simply beautiful. The area around Lake Merritt changes my impression of Oakland from a strictly urban city to one of hip eateries, beautiful lights and lots of nature. If I could live anywhere in Oakland, it would be here.

Lake Merritt is among Oakland's pride as being a great urban oasis. About 3 miles of lake finds people running, walking, boating at all hours. The Lake Merritt Wildlife Refuge is a national historic landmark and protected refuge. It was the first national wildlife refuge in the country and hosts an incredible array of ducks, geese, pelicans, herons, and egrets. Surrounding the lake is a "Necklace of Lights" - 1920's lamp posts connected by strings of lights. There is park space surrounding the Lake, perfect to read a book, suntan, or to people watch.

Lake Merritt, often referred to as Oakland's backyard, is an unassuming park a few blocks from Oakland's downtown. While there's nothing spectacular about the lake itself, you can learn and discover a lot about the city through its circumnavigation. From the arterial boundary between it and the Kaiser Center/California Museum to views up into the hills and burgeoning neighborhoods around it's northern edge.
If you're staying in a downtown Oakland hotel - ditch the treadmill and run around the lake. It'll open your eyes to what's great about Oakland - things that the popular media often miss.

I live 10 minutes walking distance from the lake, and I love the area.
If you are looking to get into shape, it's a great place to go running. There are even these monsterous stairs you can try to tackle as you run around the lake.
It's a great location to sight see if you are new to the area.
There are so many things close to Lake Merritt. Restaurants, theaters, farmer's markets, and so much more.
You can even have a romantic date on a gandola boat ride.
You just can't swim in the water, it's been tainted by city pollution.
