I understand its one of the biggest lakes in the US. It does not really look a like due to its expanse but we had fun taking photos. It helped that my cousin was a professional photographer :) Loved the surroundings although we went autumn so it was kinda windy and really cold.Recommended for:

Arguably one of the best things about Chicago is its prime access to the shores of Lake Michigan. I love to take long walks along the pedestrian path that starts off Lake Shore Drive near Northerly Island Park (and I like to end up at the Jamba Juice by the Hancock Center for a smoothie). In the summer, you can't beat the sights and sounds of people playing beach volleyball, tossing Frisbees, and sunbathing in the sand.Recommended for:

Lake Michigan has so much to offer. A beautiful sun set a night. Hot white sand beaches. My favorite is climbing up the sand dunes! There are seagulls and sea shells. The water isn't crystal clear but it's clean. Such a good relaxing family trip, the beaches never seem to be too crowdedRecommended for:

Growing up on Long Island I'm a huge beach guy...and while we have awesome beaches there...you can't exactly go swimming in the waters surrounding Manhattan just yet...so when I went swimming in Lake Michigan years ago and then walked around Chicago in a bathing suit and sneakers with my buds...we found it fairly amusingRecommended for:

I called my mom the first time I saw Chicago's lake front.
"Mom... there's an OCEAN in the MIDDLE of the CITY!" It's been true love ever since. No matter the season, I find peace, unity and inspiration in and along Lake Michigan.
If you miss walking the lakefront, you've missed the whole thing.

Gotta love the lake! Take a dip in the summer if you dare. Not because it's ass cold but more because its full of bacteria LOL. Anyway I suggest finding a friend with a boat and see the city from that view!

Ahhh the lake...it is as much a part of the city as Sears Tower is. Come summer, much of the activity Chicago has surrounds the lake - whether it is the beach, the lakeshore path, the parks, the concerts...not to mention all the boats.

Chicago's lake front is really nice, especially when it is warm. The views you can get of the Chicago Skyline from the lake are spectacular and is really worth trying to do a cruise of some sort to get some great panoramic pictures

What's great about Lake Michigan is that there's plenty of ways to enjoy the lake from land. The city's constructed great running trails around it and parks for people to enjoy the area.
The biggest downside to the big city next to the lake is obvious to most. The lake negatively effects the weather in this area and can cause the weather to be unstable.

Lake Michigan is the greatest of lakes. Suck it Lake Huron!
Most of the Chicago lakefront is publicly accessible and there are 17 miles of shared-use paths starting at the South Shore Cultural Center going all the way up to Ardmore St. Further north there are for-pay beaches.

What's so cool about Lake Michigan, from the Chicago side, is the dominance it has over the entire city. All roads lead to Lake Michigan, it's the most worthy finish line reward. Beautiful and bold, Lake Michigan is epic.
Run, beach, cycle, roller blade, see a show, eat some grub, read a book, or close your eyes and suck in the fresh air. I don't actually know how you could miss Lake MIchigan in Chicago.

I have always lived by the Ocean, and I am not really a fresh water guy. However, it's amazing how much I fell in love with Lake Michigan. Big enough to fool me - it almost felt like I was by the ocean.
I've also had the pleasure of going fishing, and boy, does Lake Michigan offer som fine fish, and some great stories to follow... ;)
Another "cool" thing about it is that we get a nice breeze in the summer. In the winter (when it's freezing cold anyway) we get the nicest ice sculptures.
I love jumping in the lake, and it's neat that one can even swim right by down town.

Lake Michigan is incredibly vast and beautiful when standing in the areas of Grant Park viewing out onto the lake. I feel like this along with the Chicago River really defines and gives Chicago that extra oomph that it has as an attractive tourist city.
The lake provides an amazing view for many businesses and apartment / condo owners as well as a source of entertainment for the city at Navy Pier and it's gorgeous, as Rodger W. said, all year round. It truly is a National Treasure and I look forward to visiting it for years to come.
