About an hour or so from Belize City, this is a great all day activity. Once you meet with the tour operator, they take you on a speed boat ride along the river to the ruins. You'll see alligators, monkeys, birds, and other wild animals. Once at the ruins, you'll walk and hike around. The guides will tell you history, culture, and civilizations of the Mayans. The tour includes lunch.

Well worth the day it takes. You will probably stay the night before in Belize City, and travel to Lamanai the next morning...however, check w/ a local tour operator for details.
Lamanai is a unique and special site. Huge ancient reservoirs, temples. This tour starts by accessing the site by boat, and make sure everyone is up to walking a bit!

I thought Lamanai was awesome. I'm not a history buff but I can appreciate spectacular ruins when I see them. Plus, when I was there, there weren't too many other people which added a very cool element to it. If you go, make sure to climb to the top of the High Temple for a great view. Also, a guide is a good idea. I would have missed out on a lot of stuff if I had toured the ruins without one.
