Climb to the top of the High Temple for spectacular views or marvel at the ancient craftsmanship of the Jaguar temple at this collection of well-preserved Mayan ruins. The Mayans, who inhabited this major city as early as the 16th century B.C.E., named it “Submerged Crocodile”, which probably relates to the New River Lagoon, which flows lazily past the site. 1970’s and it is possible more of the temple complex remains hidden within the virgin rainforest that surrounds it. The adjacent jungle gives the already mysterious place an added feeling of wonder, not to mention the added bonus of wildlife such as howler monkeys, parrots, and crocodiles. Birders will find the site especially rewarding.
