Langkawi is an archipelago of over one hundred islands in Malaysia’s Andaman Sea. Of these islands, only two, Pulau Langkawi and Pulau Tuba are inhabited by any significant number of people. The islands were granted duty free status in the late nineteen eighties in an effort to speed development and attract tourism. The move worked, and Langkawi is now a popular tourist destination. Visitors choose from many beautiful natural sights, including the seven Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls and the islands’ tallest mountain, Gunung Raya. The islands feature many pristine beaches, almost too many to count, which are always a hit with locals and visitors alike. Malaysian food is unique and available in ample quantities. Be sure to try a typical nasi lemak breakfast.

A very chilled island. The beaches are nice but nothing out of this world. It is a good place to come and relax for a few days.

do drop by one of the most beautiful island in Malaysia; beaches, waterfalls, jungle trekking for the outdoor enthusiastic. Mahsuri's Mausoleum is a local lgend where she cursed the island to seven generation of infetile and poverty for wrongly accused her.

Langkawai is a beautiful and relaxing beach resort that easily accessible by ferry and plane. There are enough touristy spots to keep things interesting and the resorts to keep things relaxing.

Living proof people can be happy where they are, as most of the staff I have met at the hotel(Pelangi Beach Hotel) over the twenty years I have been going there, are locals; happy, helpful, and content. I had my wedding celebrations there, and we all had a wonderful time. My mother inlaw left her camera in the taxi, and the taxi driver tracked her down through the hotel, and returned her camera, refusing to accept any reward! The people make the place special!

For those who know me, it comes as no surprise that I rate the Datai as one of the best resorts in the world; brilliant beach, set back in the jungle with some great wildlife (especially birds), its my sort of place.

But also, checkout the Gulai House restaurant located on the beach, in the mangroves, it's top Malaysian food and good value for a resort-run restaurant.

Love it. It's developed enough for tourism (Roads, Hotels) and not over developed. We went in May, which seems to be low season, as the day we rented and drove a car exploring the island, we were often the only car on the road.

Unfortunately it take too long to get there fr. New York. 24 hours travel time in economy class. Cost/Benefit analysis says not worth it, unless, I am already in Asia.

Food Notes: Most memorable - Green Curry Chicken at Roses II across the road from Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort as the spices and coconut milk were all so fresh.

Typical island life. Chilled out, slow paced, everything close together, great water sports. And an added bonus - duty free chocolate and alcohol. Great for some island living

Reasonably nice beaches and lovely karst topography. There are some great hotels here but Langkawi faces tough competition from Southern Thailand and doesn't quite measure up. That said, it is still nice so certainly hard not to like it.
