The Murray Premises is a charming and historic boutique hotel right on the water front in downtown St John's. After numerous trips coming and staying in modern hotels and guesthouses, I had often ... read more
noticed the Murray Premises and wanted to give it a try. The rooms had a strong feel of hand-crafted wood and nostalgia, are comfortable and clean - and frankly, in St. John's sometimes dreary climate - hard to leave! The location could not be more ideal for exploring George Street and the downtown area. It lacks some of the frills and business services of a modern hotel, but makes up for it in charm and coziness.

      Hi Latrice,

I noticed that you had Murray Premises on your trip itinerary and wanted to put a good word in for this hotel. I've stayed at a couple different hotels in St. John's, and this was my favorite for location and Newfoundland charm. It is a bit older and lacks some of the amenities of a more modern hotel, but the rooms are super charming and the access to downtown St. John's is unbeatable.

My visit to this gorgeous historic outpost was a good excuse for day hike on a beautiful Newfoundland summer day. The views from Signal Hill are outstanding - both of downtown St. Johns and the sea ... read more
and coastline beyond. Apparently, this is where the first telegraph was sent across the Atlantic, so there is a good bit of history as well. Very nice spot to visit.

If the weather cooperates, a hike out to Signal Hill is a great day outing in St. John's. It is close enough to hike directly from most hotels in town, and the walk will bring you out of the harbor and around onto the open Newfoundland coast. There is an interesting historic tower on the top of the hill and the views are outstanding. Keep a look out for whales!

My favorite street in all of Canada. The first time I visited here I thought I had died and gone to the Purgatory of Pubs. I was mistaken, it was actually Heaven! Lively, welcoming and just a little ... read more
edgy, George Street brings everything you love about a traditional Irish Pub and magnifies it 1000x with an unparalleled folksy live music and an underground arts scene. If you're familiar with New Orleans' Bourbon Street or Key West's Duval Street, this is the chilly, North Atlantic version - sharing it's sister party district's wealth of colonial history doused in fine rum - or "Screech" as they call it here!

      Hi Latrice,

Lucky you! I love St. John's. What once was little more than a cold, cod-fishing outpost has really blossomed with a thriving arts scene, and an amazing dedication to the natural sciences, considering its remote location. It's also fascinating because they've maintained a lot of their Irish heritage and fisherman traditions, leading to a fairly unique culture. For live music, good beer, and all other kinds of nightlife fun, head over to George Street. It's the St. John's micro version of New Orleans' Bourbon Street. Tons of pubs, tons of folksy rock, and great fresh fish. Be sure to try the local rum, called 'Screech'.
