I was searching for a romantic getaway to surprise my husband for his birthday. Enter Layla Guesthouse, a private oasis amidst the multicultural town of Puerto Morelos and the Mayan riviera. The guesthouse has 2 bungalow suites surrounded by a tropical sand garden. Each suite includes a wonderful setting with a small kitchen and living room, an outdoor rainfall shower and a serene bedroom. Layla Guesthouse is only a block away from the beach and a short walk to the town's square.
Run by its fabulous and gracious hosts, Robin Brown and Steve Lew, the experience at Layla is quite unique. Steve and Robin immediately make you feel at home - like a local - sharing all of the secret, fun and inspiring spots, in and around Puerto Morelos.
One of our highlights was to learn about the sacred water ecology of the area: from the mangroves to the Caribbean sea, and the amazing "Cenotes". We swam in the most pristine waters underneath a cathedral made of stalactites. Steve and Robin organize the tour, so be sure to ask for it!
The guesthouse is opening a cafe, a beauty salon with the skills of NY/Parisian-trained Steve Lew, as well as a learning center for language, ecology and short local history classes. Starting in November.
We will return to Layla Guesthouse soon!
A few things to consider about Puerto Morelos:
It is an authentic Mexican town, with very lovely locals. Many speak English and the food around the town's square is great. Puerto Morelos features several restaurants of both local and international cuisine. Also there are beach bars/restuarants next to the sea and yoga classes whilst the sun rises. Truly a great town.Recommended for:
