Gayle and I took a nice hike up Mount Wanda late this morning and afterwards hankered for some Asian food and a beer. A work colleague had raved about Lemongrass and despite my reservations about Martinez as destination dining, we drove downtown to see if all the "hype" was true.
Most definitely. We walked into a space with nice natural lighting, high ceilings, and soothing green, brown, and tan colours. There's nice artwork on the walls, a nicely tiled bar area up front, handsome wood tables with black chairs, and other small touches throughout.
We sat by the front window and shared a few very tasty and slightly chocolaty dark Lao beers. Gayle ordered a Vermicelli Noodle Salad Bowl with beef, while I chose the Stir Fried Red Curry with chicken. Both were excellent, came in generous portions, and were served in handsome dishes. In fact, my red curry dish was so good, that Gayle suggested that she might try to lick the plate clean!
Service was prompt, friendly and enjoyable. The main lunch dishes were reasonably priced at about $10 each, as were the Asian beers at $3.75 for bottle and glass.
I do worry whether a classy restaurant such a this one can make it in a Martinez downtown that seems to survive mostly on County-related foot traffic during the weekdays and a small-ish Farmer's Market on Sunday. I hope so, as Lemongrass Bistro is very much worth the trip and a definite repeat visit from us.
