Soft-spoken elegance defines the Les Suites hotel, starting with the subtle art deco exterior and carrying through the marble-clad entrance foyer. The bright lobby displays carefully curated collections of artifacts, adding strategic pops of color to the otherwise serene beige and blonde wood palette. Taking center stage, however, is the antique grand piano set prominently in front of the enormous windows that frame the impressive views of the Bund and Huangpu River. The Lounge oozes sophistication in khaki and pearl grey tones with clusters of seating perfect for guests to enjoy complimentary coffee, tea and refreshments while watching the river traffic float by. A thoughtful touch is the express take-away option for breakfast, which allows guests to enjoy the flakiest of croissants even on the go.

Lobby is on the 3rd floor, door man was not incredibly helpful in directing guests as to where they should go upon entering, so it can be a bit confusing. Reception is helpful and efficient. The entire hotel has a bit of a minimalistic/art deco vibe which I didn’t particularly enjoy, felt a bit sparse and not very welcoming. The restaurant is on the 2nd floor with windows looking out onto the bund but the windows didn’t extend from the floor to the ceiling and so it gave the room a bit of a squatty feeling although the ceilings were quite high. I felt the same way about the standard rooms as well; the shower heads were rather low especially for a rain shower. The hotel made me feel like a bit of a giant to be perfectly honest, rooms were compact and crowded. There were some really nice touches throughout the hotel though, apparently the hotel owner is a big antique collector so there were displays of his collections scattered in the public spaces.

Newly opened for the 2010 Expo this Bund hotel joins the other big players on Zhongshan Rd (The Waldorf, Peninsula and Peace Hotels) in offering guests exceptional river views. The lobby is located on the 3rd floor, in the interest of guest privacy, as tourists (and locals) tend to poke their head into random doorways in scenic areas. The hotels Chairman is from Taiwan, and much of the hotel is decorated with his personal collections of vintage trinkets: irons, suitcases, radios, TVs, china… you name it. The décor of the hotel itself is very minimalistic and art deco. There are no plush couches to be found here, just angular leather chairs. It’s almost as if Mad Men had a hotel… The rooms are comfortable, with a few quirky features like a retractable TV that hides into it’s table when the guests want to enjoy the view, and shows itself when you’re in the mood for a movie. The doors are all fitted with an electronic system of notifying housekeeping if you want your room made up or prefer not to be disturbed. Much more convenient than dangling a sign from the handle.
