Mountainous Lesotho, landlocked in southeastern South Africa, seems a world apart from the nation that encircles it. Small villages with traditional stone rondavel huts, men in skullcaps and wool blankets driving ponies along rough mud roads, and some fantastic upland scenery define the country, which is one of the poorest in the world. As a destination, it's more of an asterisk to South Africa than a destination in itself, but its well-preserved African flavor and stunning peaks make it a worthwhile detour from Durban or Johannesburg.
