The Library of Congress is the principle research resource for the United States Congress and the de facto national library of the United States. It is the largest library in the world in terms of number of books. The library buildings are open to the public, but only certain government officials can actually check out books and other resources. An important cultural institution, the library runs multiple projects, like the Poet Laureate program, that draw attention and funding to arts and political/anthropological research. Many rare books and documents are housed in the library’s collections, including the Declaration of Independence and an original Gutenberg Bible.
