Quaint mini-cities with beautiful deep blue waters, rocky beaches, slim alleys, and the freshest fish you've ever tasted.

This was my favorite part of our Italy trip. The towns were quaint and restful. It seemed that each town had to have a predetermined amount of peeling paint on all of it's buildings. I would love to just hang out for a week in the area. Make sure to miss the peak times... then it isn't so restful ;)

If you visit Italy, this is a "must" on your to-do list. Simply gorgeous and makes for a day or two of hiking and enjoying the seaside.

beautiful towns with stunning view of the cliffs and the sea. the towns are connected by train if you dont want to take the trails (some areas have steep hiking trails). when i was there the train was an hr late and we were sick of waiting so we took a boat ride back to the town we were staying. so glad we took the boat, it was great to see all the towns along the seashore.

I did this one day hike a couple of times. Its one of the most beautiful views and you go through 5 quaint towns on the Italian Riviera.

Yes, it's crowded in the summer, but there's almost no way the thousands of visitors can detract from the stunning setting. (Still, I highly suggest you visit outside of July or August.) I can imagine that, like the first non-Australians to see a platypus, the non-Italians who visit here are equally stunned at its impossibility. Ancient stone structures cling precariously along cliffs in scenic villages, connected by a romantic path. If you want an easy stroll, walk from Riomaggiore to Manarola, as the other three hikes are more strenuous.

PS. The only time in my travel life I couldn't find accommodation the same day was here, on a Friday in June. Plan ahead in the high season!

Five tiny colorful towns, that you can easily go by hop on and off train. Walk the trail that goes trough Via dell' Amore, between Riomaggiore and Manarola.

We enjoyed the hike and beautiful views from town to town, but it was still a tourist trap! I would not visit Cinque Terre again. If you want to go, I would suggest going for one day only. There are so many other great places to see in Italy!

Beautiful and remote rocky coastline along the Italian Riviera. We rented a Villa with a smal farm (grapes, figs, olives, lemons, and more) on the cliffs above a town called Monterosso.

Description

Liguria is the most famous Italian region known primarily for the sum of its parts. You know Genoa, the Italian Riviera and the Cinque Terre, but the bond that ties the famed settings together is Liguria. No more than 22 miles at its widest, Liguria hugs the coastline between Tuscany and the French Riviera. Long known as the Italian Riviera, the beachside resorts of ritzy locales like San Remo or ... read more
Portofino have recently been supplanted by the new It villages of the Cinque Terre, five postcard-perfect towns connected by a hair-raising seaside path. Crystal clear water and vibrant ocean life bring in snorkelers and divers, and the charming zig-zag streets of the villages practically begs for a gelato. The capital of Liguria is the indomitable port city of Genoa. With a world-class aquarium, bustling port, sublime cuisine and historic relics, Genoa's gritty reputation has been reborn, and the city was designated as a European Capital of Culture in 2004. Birthplace of ravioli and pesto, Ligurian cuisine is known for being fresh (influenced by hundreds of years of returning sailors longing for the fresh herbs and vegetables grown on hillside terraces). Seafood and delicate olive oils grace every restaurant's menu across the region.
