As opposed to the Lincoln Country Courthouse, which is more concerned with the events of the Lincoln County War and law enforcement in the county, the Lincoln Historical Center focuses on the history of the area. The museum contains artifacts and exhibits touching on the Native Americans of the region, the Indian Wars, cattle ranching and, of course, the Lincoln County War. This museum fills in many of the missing pieces as to why the war took place. Lincoln County was cattle country. The town of Lincoln came to exist because the army outpost at Fort Stanton protected it from Apache raids. The beef contracts for the fort and for Indian Reservations, became the dominant economic enterprise. Fierce competition eventually turned quite violent and the whole area exploded in a glorified gang war.
