What a strange and charming hotel! It apparently was a detention center and a prison at one point, so the very layout already sets it apart from other hotels. Take the steep, cement steps lined with historic art, or zip up to your floor in the modern elevators, but definitely take the time to explore this intriguing place. No two rooms are alike; surprises await in each one - like the lime green bathtub in one, or the grand piano I heard one guest mention was in his. The hotel is coupled with the Cultural Embassy, so whether you take in one of the thought-provoking art exhibits above the restaurant, or stand in the open center of the hotel that allows sunlight through six floors, your stay will be anything but boring. Oh, and free Wi-Fi is a huge plus.

Boutique hipster heaven. But in egalitarian Amsterdam, that means there are rooms for all budgets, which is really a treat. It's out in the Eastern Docklands, which can feel like a little bit of a hike from the center (there's a tram stop not far a way), but the views are beautiful, and it's a great break from cuteness in the historic city center. The only drawback is that the restaurant isn't great--really good for brek, but it kind of goes downhill from there.

We got a 3 star room for 5 nights. Location was great for the price, 10 mins bike/tram to both sides of the main area. The rooms were clean and unique. We recommend switching rooms to enjoy different designs. The reception has all the information and tickets needed for the city.
