In the heart of San Francisco's Mission District, so you are paying for location as much as anything. BUT...
Overall experience: great: from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, you feel important. Staff goes out of their way to make you feel at home and welcome.
Cocktails - made with care.
Wine list - to die for.
Italian food - precisely executed and delicious. A lot of thought and care clearly goes in to each dish - creation, preparation, and presentation.
Despite being in the heart of the mission, Locanda is a great restaurant - well worthy of the SF 'best' lists.

Dim lights, a relaxed ambiance, and small tables make for a cozy dinner. The cocktails are awesome (and not at all common)! They play an odd mix of music and the volume frequently changes, but the place has a cool hip vibe. Yeah, they serve Italian food, but they can still play Mos Def and Outkast. Brush up on your Italian language because the menu is legit; but the friendly staff is happy to explain items and they don't scoff at your mispronounciation. You're going to wonder why I don't recommend a more authentically Italian dessert, but try the warm chocolate cake!Recommended for:Trendsters

New favorite place in SF. Fantastic Italian food with really knowledgeable staff - we asked for recommendations on our entire meal and were very pleased with our pasta, lamb and strawberry dessert. The wine is exquisite as well. Menu changes with the seasons and there's often a wait for a table, but it's well worth it to try one of SFs newest and best places!
