Although I haven't stayed here, I recently wrote about this hotel for the Los Angeles Times in a roundup of hotels that had previous lives. The Back Bay served as Boston Police Headquarters 1925 to 1997. The 225-room hotel opened in 2004. Its ground floor lobby and sitting room replaced the police press room and areas where detectives once solved cases. Cuffs, an Irish-themed bar (located in the former drunk tank), and the Stanhope Grille restaurant now operate in the basement where holding cells once stood. Albert DeSalvo, a.k.a. the Boston Strangler, was processed and held in this basement.

You’ll almost certainly have to climb at least one short flight of stairs just to get to the lobby, so if that’s an issue be aware. Otherwise this is a pretty lavish establishment if you can swing the price. Staff is friendly and agreeable, though the front desk can get distracted and leave you waiting for a bit if you come in at the wrong time. The fitness center is a tight space located in the basement, but it’s at least private and bigger than some below-ground hotel gyms I’ve seen. Aside from boring wallpaper, the bathrooms are near-perfect and I was blown away by the amount of space they offered. The general style of the Back Bay includes a few surprising features, sometimes successfully (the frosted-glass stairs up from the restaurant) and sometimes not (the weird glittery mirror-thing in the elevators). And there’s free wi-fi!
