Of the dozens of hostels in Europe in which I've stayed, Lolo was definitely the most fun and laid back. Lolo is located downtown on the spit of land between Playa de la Concha and Playa Zorriola. If you plan on barhopping the Tapas Bars, there's no better location.
Lolo definitely feels like one of those fine old houses that, in its old age, was converted into off-campus housing. The rooms are a menagerie of primary colors while the common areas are filled with velvet couches, bean bag chairs and book shelves stocked with a completely random assortment of media.
The bedrooms have high ceilings, chandeliers and balconies overlooking downtown San Sebastian. At the same time, my room was painted turquoise and there was a certain lovely decrepitness about the place. Don't get me wrong, it's clean and maintained, it's just youthful. When I was there Lolo was run by Australian surfers who had great recommendations for eating, hiking and beaches. I made friends with the other guests; although I was only there for four days, we would usually eat together in the dining room like family. If you're young and a solo traveler, I definitely recommend Lolo.
