This is not just one museum but a whole collection of different museums. You need to choose which one you want to go to because you cannot do them all. The museum is undergoing a transformation in three phases. We visited the building by Renzo Piano, one of the architects for the Pompidou art museum in Paris. Sadly for us, a lot of the rooms were closed. Nevertheless what was open was vast as the largest collection west of Chicago.

Of course, must see while in Los Angeles, though I have not been very impressed with the art exhibits.

My favorite painting in the world (Treachery of Images, Rene Magritte) is at LACMA, so of course, the museum was tops on my list of things I had to see in LA. The museum itself is incredible - the architecture, layout, and overall design of the exhibits - just awesome. I loved it. The collection is outstanding, and the temporary exhibits were fascinating. I highly recommend making this museum a priority!

This is the kind of museum you can get blissfully lost in for hours. Even when I lived in LA, I never got tired of wandering through the exhibition halls, which are even bigger and better than before now after recent multimillion-dollar renovations. Personally, my fave is the low-lit Japanese art gallery, where you walk around a circular spiral stairway to view gorgeous multi-panel painted screens. The new Disney-sponsored (!) Mexican art gallery is another feast for the eyes, with its funky, colorful curtains and gigantic archaeological artifacts. So many special events going on here, it's worth checking the website before your visit.

If you have a BofA debit card, you can get one free admission on the 1st full weekend of each month. The museum is spread out into 6 or so buildings. My favorites were the Metropolis (huge mini car track with hundreds of cars running through this little city) and the Levitated Mass (huge rock sitting held up on each side by a thin wall). Great place to spend an afternoon, and they have quite a few things that kids would really enjoy too.

Great place to see a large and eclectic collection of art, but my specific recommendation would be to go visit the LACMA in the summer on one of their summer concert series evenings. You get to see the art and enjoy seeing local LA music outside right in the middle of downtown. One of the coolest things to do in LA in the summer. Saw Ozomatli perform for free here many years ago!

LACMA is another one of my all time favorite places to go to. They have awesome installations and permanent pieces. It's also located right smack dab in the middle of LA. If you're lucky, you might find street parking across the street. During certain day, they also have free screenings and summer jazz concerts.

One of my top 4 places in Los Angeles. I prefer their collection to MOCA's, and none of the financial difficulties. Great to wander outside before and after the art. The streetlamp collection outside is iconic- you have to take a picture with them!

This museum is a must see for any tourist or local in LA. A visit to LACMA never gets old not only because they have so many new and different things to see in each department of the museum but also because your experience at LACMA is always different with a different person. Even if you drop by and choose not to enter the museum, a person can easily lose track of time having fun by taking pictures in front of the lights that are one of LACMA's main attractions. Why? Because the lights are beautiful at night. On top of that, the lighting is perfect for pictures. So if you are ever wondering why those light poles look familiar, you can bet that you have seen them in the pictures of your Facebook friends.

There is so much to see here. Some of it I'd only seen in books and didn't realize LACMA had until I stumbled across it. It's definitely a museum that surprises and delights!

If you love contemporary art, you must make a visit to LACMA!

Even if you don't love contemporary art, the outdoor area of LACMA is a beautiful place to visit. Due to the year round lovely weather in Los Angeles, you can go any time of the year to sit outside, grab some coffee or tea, read and have a chat.

There is street parking around the area or basement parking for $10 or valet for $15. Guest admission is $15 but you can get senior and student discounts.

An all time favorite getaway of mine in the urban sprawl of Los Angeles. You can watch movies, see art exhibits, picnic out in the park- area/tar-pits, take a stroll around the Urban Lights (features in my postcard). The Activities are endless. A great date spot or relaxation to forget the stresses of working and living in Tinseltown.

This is my favorite museum in LA. The contemporary art here is always fantastic, and the museum as a whole is pretty big so that you don't run out of art to see/things to do. The bookstore contains a great selection of unique art and design books. And the cafe serves Intelligentsia!
