Although we only gave this restaurant, located in Oaxaca's historic center, four stars, we loved our meal there. It loses a star solely because of its high prices, and perhaps because a steak was slightly undercooked. For the most part, though, our meal was wonderful. The owners also have two other restaurants in Mexico and their own mezcal distillery.
The menu features Oaxacan specialties, including relleno, tlayudas and arrachera. Our favorite dishes included a relleno made from hierba santa -- a local herb -- and Oaxacan cheese, and a duck confit with hibiscus mole. Dessert, a goat-cheese flan, also was fabulous.
As one might imagine, Los Danzantes' cocktail menu is dominated by mezcal drinks. The restaurant also has a wide selection of mezcals. Our server helped us choose one by bringing three to taste.
Our meal cost a little less than $100, so this is a splurge type of place for most people. A similar meal in the United States would cost at least that much, however, so everything is relative.
