Lugano is a very quiet town in the already (relatively) quiet country of Switzerland. There are only a couple of noteworthy nightclubs and one notable casino. The area is very beautiful though, and there are several great hiking opportunities within an hour of the city.Recommended for:

Not really Swiss; not really Italian. Lugano is a hybrid, difficult to categorize. Much of the city is built on hillsides so there are lots of steps to climb. Fortunately, funiculars are also strategically placed. Another place to explore and wait for serendipity to strike.Recommended for:

One of the great Swiss resort towns and home to one of the largest banking centres in Switzerland. Beautiful lake and lots of options for Ticinese dining and entertainment. In the summer, lots of music festivals too.Recommended for:

Lugano is really the best of all worlds. They have the social support of the Swiss, the language and culture of the Italians, and the food of the French and Italians.
Nestled into a mountain on shores of Lake Lugano, Lugano is an Italian paradise hidden away in Switzerland. Skip Como, skip Bellaggio; they all get too crowded. Lugano offers a touch of seclusion with all the amenities of a vacation town. Take a hike to the top of one of the surrounding mountains and reward yourself with a swiss beer when you summit. Stroll through the lake-side flower garden at sunset and revel in Switzerland's natural beauty. Sip margaritas after dinner at the beach-themed tiki bar-- the people-watching and mid-twenties crowd keep things lively. Spend the next day at the beach, tanning off that hangover and enjoying the crisp air and warm sun.
Yes, it's a little bit sleepy; don't come here expecting a party-town (though there is one of those about 15 minutes away by bus). Come to Lugano to appreciate natural beauty, good food, and friendly people. Oh, and bonus: the town provides free wifi in the square-by-the-lake and surrounding areas!Recommended for:

The Swiss often refer to it as "clean Italy" and that really does sum it up quite well. The weather is usually pretty awesome and it sits on one of the prettiest bodies of water I've seen. The unique micro climates make for interesting hikes on which you can run into a cactus, a palm tree, and olive tree and evergreens all within a few minutes of each other.
