Usually when the words, "vegan", or "dairy free" are said to me I smile and think "You poor misguided fool...". When those two words are added to "dessert" I tend to start punching faces. But Lula's uses the word "apothecary" in its title. Apothecary. In this age of "LOL"'s and "YOLO"'s it almost brought a tear to my eye. That alone was enough to look past the confuzzling conundrum that is vegan ice cream, and enjoy the confectionary concoctions Lula offers.
Before you get to the ice cream, Lula's first treat is its storefront itself. The space is small but that doesn't stop the shop from using every square inch to push the feeling that you are in the 19th century, something that would no doubt do wonders for the stores rent. Cabinets are filled with tiny individually labeled glass containers sporting a variety of ingredients. Even the employees sport bow ties and suspenders in a non-ironic fashion that will leave hipsters scratching their unwashed heads. But Lula's truly separates itself with its medica materia. All the ice cream is created onsite and without the add of a chicken or cow. Absolutely no dairy is used in any of their creations. How is this possible? Alchemy obviously.
And the flavors! Try the Peanut butter and Jelly and tell me that heaven on Earth is not possible. And it doesn't stop there. Rum Raisin, Mint Chocolate Chip, and a Cake Batter mix that you would kick a baby for.
The minds behind this alchemist haven have managed to take the leaden idea of vegan desserts and turn it into something truly golden. This is an apothecary that anyone with a sweet tooth should have in their vocabulary.

Yes - it really is that good. It doesn't taste like something vegan, just like really delicious ice cream. My boyfriend and I shared the mint chocolate chip. It took us 3 tries to get here - it's closed Monday, and closed at 10 on Wednesday. But finally we made it, and it was so worth it.

This place is absolutely fantastic from the atmosphere (old school ice cream parlor) to the desserts (natural, vegan, and dairy-free varieties available)! I loved the feeling of going back in time and eating ice cream out of a pop glass. The only problem is that there isn't much seating, so if you go at a crowded time, you might have to stand outside and eat.
