    Karnak Temple

One of the first sights you will see when you visit Luxor. Easily accessible from town and very impressive. Relatively manageable but you'll want to seek out shade during the midday heat. A guided tour is a helpful way to understand what it was like originally and how it was used.

    Valley of the Kings

    West Bank, Luxor, Egypt

This stunning collection of tombs is one of the most impressive archaeological sights that I have visited. Most tourists do a quick day visit and then leave. I'd highly recommend a minimum of 2 days so that you can see things leisurely without feeling too rushed. A guide can be very helpful -- especially at keeping the touts away.

A small and absolutely fascinating museum that surprises with two mummies exhibited there! (King Ahmose, who fought the Hyksos , Dynasty 17, and the mummy of the man supposed to be Ramesses I, whom I believe about it is King Ay or Horemheb) A lot evidences from the Amarna Period (eg. Talatats of King Akhenatens temple found int the pylons ...

Of course must for all visitors of Luxor. For I was there not only one time, I tell you, if you do not like the heat; visit the valley in the very early morning. When I was there... there where 60 degrees... air temperature! You buy at the entrance the ticket for 3 tombs, you need two for 6, of ...

This is one of the few enclosed structures that we saw on our trip. Gives visitors a better sense of what these structures were like when they before they were damaged by history and the elements.

    Temple of Hatshepsut

One of my favorite sights near Luxor -- partially because it can be reached by a nice hike out of the Valley of the Kings. The architecture here is distinctive / a bit refreshing after visiting the tombs. Unfortunately, doesn't make it onto many day-trip itineraries.

Even before the Revolution , the restoration of the house was causing by Dr. Hawass! Do not be confused by guides who offer a home on a plateau than that of Howard Carter. It is wrong. To the house of H. Carter, it was now green with vegetation, behind it is a is a cafe. Inside the house there was ...

It is very easy to hike out of the Valley of the Kings over to Deir al-Bahri to see the Temple of Hatshepsut. The hike isn't very difficult -- I think it took us about an hour with plenty of stops. Be sure to take water, a hat, and shades. During my hike there were no tourists and only one ...

Relatively small but big on nostalgia. The big prize is the gold sarcophagus at the end of the walk.

I dread cruises and really dreaded this one but was pleasantly surprised. The ship is intimate, never feels crowded, and the service and food were excellent. A good mix of luxury and local ambience. A wonderful way to see life along the river as well as the major sights. The roof deck on this ship is less luxurious than others. ...

This memorial temple to Ramses III is in relatively good condition -- with much of the ceiling in some areas still in tact. Gives you a good sense of what the temples must have been like when they were fully operational. Nice colorful calligraphy here. Keep an eye out for the high-quality carvings at the top of the pylons.

Small but attractive complete complex right in the middle of Luxor. Like the first place you'll visit when you arrive. Easy to walk to and attractive at all hours. Be sure to visit in the evening when the lighting adds to the ambience.

Unfinished so lacking in some of the detail that you find in some of the other tombs. Relatively short. Missable if you are short on time.
