This hotel undeniably is very grand: a wide driveway swerves up past a small stone summerhouse and a fountain... yet it felt a lot like an embassy from the outside, especially as it is fronted by tall towering flagpoles and perfectly trimmed hedges. (Winston Churchill did in fact live here for some time during WWII). Due to this embassy feel... I think it lacks some of the charm and quaintness of Bath. However it remains that the service I received here was impeccable, with porters keen to help at the door and attentive hospitality in the lounge- be sure to try their delicious chunky homemade cookies. It was fun to be offered the various relaxing spaces, from a bright alfresco/conservatory meal; to the dimly-lit, smoking room-esque bar where you can while away time feeling awfully sophisticated. As for the rooms, they lack spark and originality; but are spacious with huge beds and fancy bathrooms. Views at the front look over Bath and the front garden (waving, smiling and pretending to be prime minister is allowed.) But out the back is in fact rather ugly, positioned over the grey metal roof of the spa it can be noisy if you are close to the rooftop machines that service it. The spa itself however is an absolute highlight, with extensive therapies and products available. I was impressed by the attractive outdoor heated pool, surrounded by wooden decking and shrubbery, it truly inspires you to lie back and relax. And check out the up-to-date fitness centre, where trainers help you plan a personalised exercise programme!

Stayed here on a corporate "team-building" outing, and ll I wanted to do during those interminable meetings talking about our motivatons and USP's was to go outside. The surrounds are just amazingly beautiful, and while the speakers droned on about our "solutions" and "stickyness" I floated away on the flotilla of voices coming from unnamed birds outside. The hotel is impeccable, and of a very high standard indeed. Great clean beds that you don't want to get out of, amazing food, modern and clean facilities. This place is tip-top, and in a perfect location to go stroll and explore the beauty that is Bath -- if you can get out of that darn meeting!!!
