The Sanctuary Lodge is nothing special as a hotel. But everyone wants to stay there if they can afford it. The reason is that it’s the only hotel located next to Machu Picchu – only steps away. All other hotels are in Aguas Calientes – about 30 minutes away by bus. Staying at the Sanctuary Lodge is very expensive but well worth it, even if you only stay for one night. Staying here is the best bet to beat the crowds – you can enter the Machu Picchu grounds before everybody gets there and you can stay there late watching the sunset when everybody leaves. If you are planning to climb Wayna/Huayna Picchu (the huge steep mountain behind Machu Picchu) you need to get a ticket (they are free) early in the morning. There is limited number of tickets – they are distributed starting at 6 am at the entrance to Machu Picchu. If you stay at the Sanctuary Lodge, then all you have to do is wake up before 6 am and get in line. People who come from Aguas Calientes have to walk up the steep mountain in the dark for quite a while in order to get to the entrance while the tickets are still available (bus doesn’t run that early). So, the Sanctuary Lodge is all about LOCATION.

The Sanctuary Lodge is all about location. This is a great place to stay for relaxing easy access to the ruins. That said, the pricing is exorbitant for what is basically a 3 star hotel. Service is excellent but at 1,100 USD a night during our stay, it was hard not to feel gouged.

Rooms are very basic. There are a few cosmetic attempts at making this seem like an Eco lodge (perhaps to justify the poor quality) but they are cosmetic and this is no more Eco than road side Hampton Inn. Rooms are small. Beds are hard. Showers are tepid.

Luggage assistance at the train station is helpful but we were disappointed that bags need to be sent early on the day of check out. Means you can't access your things to clean up after hiking in the morning.

Despite the hotel itself, we still liked the property. It is nice to relax and go in and out of the ruins without having to take a 30 min bus ride down to a hotel in Aguascalientes. Proximity means you are more likely to just step inside the ruins for a few minutes to see them in different light or cloud cover.

Note: the hotel over sells it's views. Don't expect special access to the park or stellar scenery from the property.

The staff work very hard to make your stay enjoyable and are very friendly / helpful.
