Madonna Inn is a landmark on the Central Coast of California perfect for travelers cruising between Los Angeles and San Francisco. All of its individually decorated by themes guestrooms are distributed throughout 2,000 acres of pastoral land. On an old-school and brightly decorated setting is the Copper Café and Pastry Shop serving all daily meals along with legendary pastries. Good steaks and live entertainment can be enjoyed at the Rush Steak House onsite. A European style pool and a modern exercise room adorned with a cascading waterfall are treats offered to guests. The service is continually welcoming.

The Madonna Inn opened for business in 1958, and quickly became a landmark on the Central Coast. The Inn was created by Alex Madonna, a successful construction magnate and entrepreneur who died in April 2004, and his wife, Phyllis. The well-known motor inn, which includes a restaurant and bakery, is prominently located on the west side of US Route 101.
The property is adorned with a pseudo-Swiss-Alps exterior and lavish common rooms accented by pink roses, Western murals, and hammered copper. Each of the 110 guest rooms and suites is uniquely designed and themed, though some tourists (like me) stop just to "piss away their time" at the famous rock waterfall urinal located in the men's washroom.
A stop at the Madonna Inn Bakery (for the large slices of cake) is a family favourite. Otherwise, this place is crazy fun and so over the top that you can't help but shake your head and leave with a smile on your face. And free Theme Parks are so hard to find these days.

It's a kitschy landmark, with its puffy pink princess perfection glaringly obvious to drivers on Hwy 101. The theme rooms (take a look online on the website!) are hilariously cheesy, especially the 'Hot Pink' and 'Caveman' digs. They're exorbitantly expensive, too, although friends of mine with teenage kids have said that staying here has been fun, to break up a long road trip. Me, I just like to stop by the weird fairytale-esque bakery for some homemade cookies. (Most infamous is the bakery's bathroom, where the men's urinal fountain is made from a genuine piece of the Berlin wall.)Recommended for:

A California coast classic, this huge Alpine-style hotel and restaurant is famous for its garish themed rooms. Think "Old Mill Room" with working water wheel behind the bed or "Caveman Room" with cavern-style bathroom. It really is as if Disneyland took a theme and outfitted a suite just for you - with a retro '60s aesthetic. In recent years, the hotel's also added spa and limo services to its offerings, if you're looking for an upscale resort-type experience.Recommended for:

Lots of pink stuff everywhere. More like a motel with different themed rooms. Don't believe all the hype, but worth a look if you need a place to stay on a long drive up or down the coast.

Love Madonna Inn - this place is a must stay at least once in a lifetime :) if you are a "themed" room type of person. It's not The W or the Ritz but it is one super hot pink spot ;) Love the steakhouse for a fun, special dinner on the property and the diner for breakfast the next morning. The food is nothing extraordinary but everything is a good time. This property is 100% FUN - the pool and hot tubs are great. Stayed in "Romance" loved the rock shower and the toilet, oh my! who reviews a toilet?!?! but seriously this is a great stop on a wine tasting trip or CA road trip.

One of the most memorable hotels I've been to. Each of the rooms in the inn portray a different theme. I stayed in the Austrian Suite, one of the larger rooms at the inn, and I felt like royalty. Blue accents, antique furniture, and European feel transported me to another world. Check out the in-house day spa, outdoor pool and restaurants, too. Whether it's a one night stay or a weeklong one, the Madonna Inn should provide comfort and a unique, unforgettable hotel experience.

It's not a cliche to say there really is nothing like this hotel in the entire world. The restaurant and lobby are decorated in hot pink, light pink, dark pink, with a few pink accents thrown in just in case there wasn't enough pink, the rooms take on a totally different feel. Most of them have themes, some more pronounced than others. There's the caveman room and the Western room that are totally over the top, but there are also plenty of ... comparatively more understated rooms. My favorite is the tall and short room, with chairs and other furnishings for mismatched guests. Even if you don't stay here, be sure you stop in for lunch, or for a slice of their princess cake.

This place is like no other place I've ever been. I don't even know how to describe it, except it's like stepping into someone else's dream, if that dream were a hotel conceived of in the most kitsch terms possible.

If you're road-tripping between San Francisco and Los Angeles and you want a stay over along the way, you can't beat one of the most extraordinary hotels in the world. In trying to describe it I'm drawing a blank, as it has to be seen to believed. But let me try anyway: picture rooms the size of small houses, filled with a smattering of colors and textures, subscribing to themes like Old West, China Flower, Cloud Nine and Yahoo! and with beds that make king-size seem small. It is simply put, an amazing adventure to stay here, and every where you go in the hotel, from the Grotto bar, to the baroque dining area leaves you speechless. And if you want an extra special treat, stay there at Christmas, when they must use 50% of the SLO power grid to light the millions of lights they have strung up throughout the hotel.

Unlike anyplace else on earth, the Madonna isn't named for the singer, but takes "over-the-top" even more over the top. Stay in a themed room built into the mountain if you can, or at least muse at the postcards of each unique room in the lobby. Then sit in the crazy pink and red dining room, the garish bar, or the copper cafe and enjoy as much pink cake, steak, or the sweet Pink Lady drink invented here. Your Pepto
Bismol doesn't have this much pink, and it certainly doesn't have nearly as much kitsch!
