Madrid is a compact capital city. That's not to say it doesn't seem like one - it's very stately - but it's considerably more walkable than London, Paris etc.
It's also very charming, with a more mature / less hedonistic atmosphere than that of Barcelona. Great architecture, great restaurants, lots of culture = well worth a trip.

When you think of Madrid you might first think of sunshine, sangria, and bullfights, but spend a few hours here and you'll quickly discover there's a whole lot more to be seen and sampled. The city is flat out beautiful, historic, and this forever-famous capital city is pulsing with perhaps more life and excitement than anywhere else. When is the best time to visit? Good question. Hands down Spring or Fall...my preference is fall; I don't know why but Madrid is just unbeatable when it comes to sweater weather. Just remember that during July and August many of the locals flee for the coast to avoid the oppressive heat (and you should probably do the same).

Amazing time! I went during Easter time and it was great. If you're religious and would like to see traditional catholic ceremonies, this is the place. Their Easter traditions are beautiful and very moving.

Madrid was my favorite city in Spain. It combines the best nightlife I've seen in Europe with absolutely incredible cultural exhibits. Night clubs, Picasso and really good cheese.
