Madrid was my favorite city in Spain. It combines the best nightlife I've seen in Europe with absolutely incredible cultural exhibits. Night clubs, Picasso and really good cheese.

Some travelers skip over Madrid, Spain's cosmopolitan capital city, but I found it refreshingly real and down-to-earth after visiting some of the country's more touristy destinations like the Costa del Sol and Barcelona. There are plenty of museums, art galleries and excellent traditional and modern restaurants to keep you busy for at least a few days, if not an entire week.

With the Prado, the historic architecture and squares, the ham, the tappas and hot chocolate, the ham, and extensive pedestrian zones, Madrid is truly a top destination. Did I mention they have ham?
