This city is super cosmopolitan, with easy peasy public transport. Definitely try to see some flamenco while you are there. The Prado is a world class art museum, not to be missed.

I never really looked at Madrid as a European "must".
It is not to be missed!
Immaculate, historical, great food and an even better nightlife.
I highly recommend!

Gayle and Madrid go way back. She was first here as a Nanny during the last days of Franco. Ten years ago, she took here son here and last month you brought me along. I previously visited Madrid for a day back in the early 1980s while on a business trip and onwards (via Train) to Zaragoza.
Gayle and I found Madrid is very cosmopolitan, fun, and relaxed. In Canadian Terms, Madrid is Toronto (including the superiority complex) and Barcelona is Montreal. I think of them as 2 cities in the same Country, but separated by different Nations, Cultures, and War. Both are great places to be, even though I did get a few comments about my FC Barcelona jersey.
We especially enjoyed Madrid when we were here for Día de Hispania and all the people in their patriotic presense. We also liked out relaxing walk through Retiro Park, gazing at the architecture, hanging out at the Plaza Mayor, seeing Guernica at the Reina Sofia, enjoying a glass of wine at Mercado San Miguel, and just walking around here and there.

Madrid is a compact capital city. That's not to say it doesn't seem like one - it's very stately - but it's considerably more walkable than London, Paris etc.
It's also very charming, with a more mature / less hedonistic atmosphere than that of Barcelona. Great architecture, great restaurants, lots of culture = well worth a trip.

Столица Испании. Must see! Для ознакомления с городом очень удобен двухдневный автобусный тур. Билет действителен в течение 2 дней, и предоставляет скидки на входные билеты во многие музеи города.
