Dry cupcakes, awful flourless chocolate cakes, lines around the corner during a weekend day. The only good thing about this place is the banana pudding and the fact that they stay open until 11pm, so you can satisfy that late night sweet tooth.

Hard to believe that this is the place credited with starting the cupcake craze. Clearly, they've outsourced their service to the post office. The only reason there is a line is that the staff are too busy sneering to actually help customers. This is one of the most unpleasant places I've been in the city. The doorman is friendly but everyone inside is... at the very best... just moderately unpleasant.
The cupcakes are good but there are plenty of places in the city that are as good or better. I prefer Billy's or the Little Cupcake Bakeshop and they are MUCH friendlier.
This is the kind of place that gives NY an unfairly bad reputation. Don't encourage it by giving them your money.
Buyer beware, Magnolia is self service and they can't be bothered to put the right cupcake next to the right sign.

The famous Magnolia Bakery (as featured in Sex & the City and The Devil Wears Prada) is as good as they say. Red velvet is the one to pick if you're restricting yourself to a single cupcake. Plus it's right across from Marc by Marc Jacobs so you can swing by and do a little shopping too.
