The various incarnations of the Maid of the Mist have been taking passengers as close to the falls as they dare to go. I've taken the gondola over the whirlpool but not the Maid of the Mist. My parents recently took one of the jet boats that get really close.

A ride on the Maid of the Mist is an absolute must. (And a sure fire hit at any age.) Basically, it's a boat ride from either the American or Canadian side that takes passengers so close to falls themselves--American, Bridal Veil, and Horseshoe--that you'll get totally soaked (unless, of course, you opt to wear the rain gear provided). The close-up views are spectacular too.....

Great experience. Went with my family that was visiting from Arizona. It was a lot of fun. It was breathtaking to see the falls up close. It was very humbling and awe inspiring. It makes me praise God for his wonders.....

The Maid of the Mist was everything I hoped it would be. I grew up in Rochester, NY and visited the falls many times a a child. I always want to go on the Maid of the Mist, but was told by my parents that it was too expensive. I brought my two daughters with me and we had a blast! I wore a raincoat under the flimsy blue poncho that they give you, and STILL got soaked...lol. It was totally worth it. You feel like you are IN the falls. Unfortunately the credit card machine was broken when we went, so I had to use cash, and only had US$. It was no problem and they even gave me change in USD. Cross one off my bucket list!

Sure, you can watch Niagara Falls from on land, whether you're on the Canadian or US side of the border. But nothing beats hopping on board these boats for a trip extremely close to the base of the thundering falls, where you will get soaked with spray even if you're wearing one of those funny blue plastic ponchos they'll give you (and which I still use for backpacking today). Totally worth the money and the wait, no matter how long the lines are. Go early or late in the day for the shortest wait times and best photography light.

Don't miss out on this ride on the waters with the whole family. Bring your camera's, but beware everyone will be trying to get the same shot. Even though your wearing the poncho, you will still get a little damp.....but well with it.

It is going to be WET. So if you bring your camera - make sure it is actually waterproof. This was an awesome experience. It is quite hard to photograph when you are near the falls as there is so much spray that it will get your lens all full of bubbles so make the best of the incoming journey. This is the second best way to experience the Niagara Falls - the best one is via helicopter. Do both if you are only going to come here once.
