The parking lot is very small, so expect to wait or park on the road (at your own risk!). The trail is paved and usually well kept. Decent views and open during the evenings - great for full moon hikes!Recommended for:Outdoor Enthusiasts

The Makapu'u Lighthouse trail is a pretty easy trail to hike on when you're in Hawaii. There isn't too much of an elevation change, and I saw many people doing this hike in sandals.. or with baby strollers.
The hike is short, and the view at the end is rewarding.
There are no restrooms or water along the hike so bring water and a hat. At the end of the hike, there are nice views of the lighthouse, and of the water. There were a few whales there when I hiked it.
Regarding parking, there was a lot of parking at the trailhead. Didn't have a problem finding a spot near the entrance.

One of the easiest and scenic trails on the east side. I love taking visitors here because there's plenty of parking (just don't leave anything visible in the car), nice paved road, very scenic along the ocean, possible whale spotting points, and once reached the top, a beautiful view of the lighthouse against the ocean and sweeping views of beaches, mountains, and blue waters of the east side. On a clear day you can see Molokai, Maui, and Lanai. It isn't a covered hike, so definitely wear hat, shades, sunblock, and whatever protection. It is not a long hike, but does have slow steep incline to the top.

A must see for those liking a little exercise and fresh air. More than half of the hike is along a paved road that is even suitable for strollers. It gets a little steeper as you go, but there are benches along the way. Incredible views as you get higher and during whale season you can often view whales from this hike. Good for the whole family; the less athletic members can stop on the way up and enjoy the view from a bench while awaiting your return. Parking lot at the bottom. If you make it to the top you will enjoy a wide view of the Windward side of the island, with breathtaking views of the Ko'olau Mountain Range, Rabbit Island, and the Makapu'u Lighthouse

The Makapu‘u Point trail, (in the Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline) is a paved trail that winds from Highway 72 to the Makapu'u Lighthouse on top of the peak. Up at the lighthouse you get great views of the waves crashing on the coastal lava, and you can see up the coast to Rabbit Island and beyond. When the seas are calm you can see whales. It's a good walk in the wet seasons when all the other trails are muddy, but it can be hot midday. It's about 2 miles round trip. Remember to bring water and binoculars.

A short family-friendly hikes for all ages and abilities on Oahu's southeast coast, this trail is not too far of a drive or bus ride from Hanauma Bay. It's just over a mile along a paved service road to the top of Makapuu Point, where you can look over at the Windward Coast's bays and beaches. The lighthouse is closed to the public, but its red top makes a perfect postcard photo.

Love this hike. Great for kids and beginners, but can also be challenging if you want a real work out. We saw a guy doing squats on his way up! And the trail is paved so you can jog up as well. If you choose to hike, it is a quick 25 minutes to an amazing view! One of my favorite hikes on Oahu.

I would love this place IF they had restrooms - which they don't. However, it's a beautiful trail, and doable for even the littlest of kids -- plus it's totally conducive to strollers which can help if those youngsters start to yawn it up. The view from the top is gorgeous, and if you hike this trail during the months of Feb-April, you might just see some whales out in the water!
