This resort sits just passed Wailea and I know many people who enjoy that because it is far less crowded. When I've stayed here, the vibe feels peaceful and quiet. Another great thing about this resort is that it is situated on a beach with some of the best beach diving and snorkeling. If you've heard of Turtle Town, this is the spot. Many turtles frequent a spot just off shore and its one of the best places to see these beautiful animals.Recommended for:Family Travelers

With world class golfing, a huge beach, great body surfing, close proximity to the best snorkeling on the island, a private location, whale watching and mostly perfect weather – there is something for the whole gang to experience here! Lackluster architecture is compensated for by one of the most appealing garden courtyards I’ve ever seen. Beautiful trees, waterfalls and lotus ponds are all over the place. Several very classy dining options are available – my favorite being the Cafe Kiowai breakfast buffet. The beach is a surreal sight with gentle waves and incredibly soft sand just steps away from the pool. People can also be seen zooming around the coastal trail on bikes. Front desk help was very accommodating and chatty. Rooms were decent but not spectacular. Keep in mind this is one of the most incredibly diverse spots to play on the island. Location is essential!Recommended for:Outdoor Enthusiasts

The Makena Beach & Golf Resort has recently undergone a complete Restoration and Revitalization to mark it’s 25th Anniversary and is a very beautiful experience. Rather than being “Off the Beaten Path”, this property is at the End of the Beaten Path, past Wailea in Makena with its beautiful beaches and green Gold Course. The interior of the hotel is lush and beautiful, and the view from the rooms is breath taking.
We have stayed in the hotel many times over the years after special events at the hotel, rather than driving 50 miles home. On a recent visit to the hotel I was pleased to see the rooms are better than ever after the upscale renovation. The room rates start at $199 a night. With a minimum 3 night stay they include the sumptuous Breakfast Buffet, so forget your diet and go for it. After all, you’re on vacation.
One of the nicest things about the Makena Beach Resort experience is the people. The staff is very helpful and friendly, and they make you feel at home away from home. This is special.

I loved the cool, open lobby, the freshness of the rooms and the huge golden-sand beach. I needed some Michael Phelps-like ocean swimming and a hike from one end of the 1800-acre property to the other after the awesome hula brunch on Sunday.

They just finished a room-by-room renovation at the Makena Beach Golf & Resort (in November 2011), and I'm impressed -- soothing, sculptured gold and cream carpet, lush pillowtop beds, comfortable all-new furniture. The sweet oceanfront views are thankfully unchanged. This place is huge -- 1800 acres in all, with two championship-caliber golf courses (one of which is currently closed for renovations) -- which gives it a pleasantly uncrowded feel. The only downside is that it's quite a hike to the unimpressive (by Maui resort standards) pool and farther still to the far more impressive beach.
